The Northeast Center to Advance Food Safety (NECAFS) determined through extensive stakeholder engagement that currently available educational resources and programming do not adequately address produce safety in hydroponic and aquaponic (HP/AP) operations. Resources are needed for multiple audiences, primarily growers and technical service providers such as extension educators, researchers, and regulatory personnel. NECAFS published a set of 5 factsheets in spring 2023 which offer exploratory discussions of important produce safety topic areas through a HP/AP lens. In fall 2023, NECAFS hosted 2 educational webinars, available for viewing on the NECAFS YouTube channel, and organized 3 food safety sessions at the Aquaponics Association 2023 Annual Conference. An Advisory Group has been assembled with members representing many different roles related to HP/AP produce safety. A Delphi study is currently underway to elicit expert opinions about the produce safety related needs and preferred educational approaches of HP/AP growers, and results will inform creation of additional tailored work. Planned outputs include introductory educational web, print, and video resources, grower case studies in similar formats, and supplemental materials for the Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) Grower Training. Planned educational events include additional webinars, calls with the PSA Educators’ group, remote PSA Grower Training tailored for hydroponic and aquaponic growers, and in-person workshops. Members of the Advisory Group are involved at all stages of material creation and revision. The overall goal of this project is to facilitate coordinated development of produce safety educational resources and experiences for aquaponic and hydroponic stakeholders across the nation to support increased understanding and reduced risk
