As the Food Safety Project Manager for National Farmers Union, Ava DeBovis oversees and manages the Local Food Safety Collaborative (LFSC) project, which aims to provide outreach, education, and training to small local food producers and processors on the Produce Safety and Preventive Controls rules of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Prior to employment with NFU, DeBovis worked for several years on increasing fresh fruit and vegetables consumption among youth and families. She has provided training and technical assistance on a wide variety of federal child nutrition programs, anti-hunger initiatives, and farm-to-school best practices. She began her career in food systems after completing terms of national service with AmeriCorps VISTA and Feeding America’s Child Hunger Corps. DeBovis graduated from College of Charleston with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, and from Arkansas State University with a Master’s in Public Administration and Nonprofit Management.
